South Carolina Maritime Museum
Georgetown, SC
The South Carolina Maritime Museum opened in December, 2011. It is located in a historic building on the waterfront in downtown Georgetown. The space was purchased and renovated by the Harbor Historical Association of Georgetown, a 501(c)(3) tax exempt group, to further its mission of preserving and promoting the maritime history of Georgetown and South Carolina. Since 1993, this group has sponsored the Georgetown Wooden Boat Show, an event staged yearly on the third Saturday in October. The Show has become renowned, and profits from the Show have been accumulated for the purpose of developing a South Carolina maritime museum, which has now become a reality.
To date, the museum has acquired a collection of museum-quality ship models and has shown two photographic exhibits of Georgetown maritime history. Future plans include week-long junior sailing classes throughout the summer, further exhibits and artifacts for display, and spirited events for museum members during the year.
