The N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer, on the 57-acre site of a former Southern Railway steam locomotive repair facility, boasts the nation’s largest restored roundhouse with an impressive collection of restored locomotives and rail cars. Other exhibits include a collection of antique automobiles and other artifacts that tell the story of transportation in North Carolina. Admission is free, with a small fee for the on-site train ride, offered March-December. Regular hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sundays. Winter hours (Nov.-March) are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays- Saturdays, 1-5 p.m. Sundays and closed Mondays.

The N.C. Transportation Museum relies on its volunteers and supporters to complete numerous restoration projects around the 57-acre site. Current fundraising efforts are focused on the Back Shop, an immense structure stretching the length of two football fields and built in 1905. The Back Shop served as the major overhaul facility for steam locomotives. Today the Back Shop is seen as an ideal location to tell the story of North Carolina’s transportation history. This building is large enough to house trains, trucks, automobiles and aircraft in a protected, enclosed environment. More than 150,000 visitors per year are expected to pass through the Back Shop after its renovation. While some funds are available to turn the historic Back Shop into a modern-day museum facility, the N.C. Transportation Museum Foundation is still seeking funds to complete the project, which will cost nearly $16 million.
