Hurricane Katrina

We are saddened that many U.S. Gulf Coast homes, businesses, as well as museums, parks and historic sites were severely damaged and/or destroyed during Hurricane Katrina and her aftermath.

As with all residents of the stricken region, many museum staff members have personally lost everything or don’t even know the status of their loved ones or homes.

Meanwhile, many staff members and their families rode out the storm, against FEMA orders, working around the clock at their facilities to secure priceless exhibits, protect animals and keep aquarium tanks running.

PLEASE HELP through the following organizations:

American Association of Museums: To learn more about the status of museums affected by Hurricane Katrina go to the American Association of Museums Hurricane webpage.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation has established the 2005 Hurricane Relief Fund to grant monies to affected communities and help re- establish their economies, much of which are based on historic tourism. Donate online and learn more at: National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The Southeastern Museum Conference is coordinating assistance from the AIC Emergency Preparedness, Response, & Recovery Committee and the Southeast Regional Conservation Association. SEMC is assessing needs; identifying available freezer space, storage facilities, and triage areas; and receiving donations of goods, services, and funds for distributions. Contact Richard Waterhouse, SEMC's executive director, at 404-378-3153 or

Checks can be made payable and sent to SEMC- The Southeastern Museums Conference, P.O. Box 9003, Atlanta, GA 31106. The SEMC is assessing damages, helping with exhibit salvage efforts and will donate finances, supplies and manpower where it is most needed.

The Southern Arts Federation has established the Southern Arts Federation Emergency Relief Fund to assist arts organizations and artists residing in Gulf Coast communities most devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
