The Mason County Museum was chartered as the Maysville and Mason County Library, Historical, and Scientific Association in 1878 and is said to be the oldest state historical organization in continuous existence. In 1975 the association changed focus and continued as the Mason County Museum. In 2003, with more changes on the horizon, we are excited to have a new name, Kentucky Gateway Museum Center.

The visitor to the Museum Center is first greeted by Kentucky’s largest Siberian Elm, 70 feet tall and over a century old, as certified by the Kentucky Division of Forestry in 1996. Such stateliness is only appropriate for this historical community.

Our mission includes preserving and making available for research historical records collections from a seven county area. This includes the Kentucky counties of Bracken, Fleming, Lewis, Mason, and Robertson, and the Ohio counties of Adams and Brown.
