Frequently Asked Questions

1. Exactly what is a museum? Are aquariums, zoos, nature and science centers also considered museums?

Absolutely. There are more than 8,000 museums in the United States, of all sizes and types. There are large urban art museums, rural heritage sites, natural history museums and institutions with living collections, such as zoos, aquariums, and botanical gardens. There are museums dedicated to children, to science and technology, there are historic houses, and museums with special collections from airplanes and kites to battleships and model boats.

2. Does ShopforMuseums.com also support “for-profit” organizations?

No. Our purpose is to raise funds only for non-profit institutions as defined above.

3. Why do people give to museums?

There are many reasons to donate to museums. Some people donate because the museum is an important civic institution that helps to define and enrich their communities. Others feel that the lives of their children are enhanced and their horizons expanded by the appreciation of both art and nature. Still others donate because of a personal relationship to or interest in the museum’s collection. Whatever your reason, you can be assured it is greatly appreciated.

4. Do museums need our support? I thought endowments or large donations meet their financial needs.

Absolutely! The fiscal health of museums depends on donors contributing general operating support. This type of support is often overlooked; we seldom see public announcements of annual campaigns or major social events organized to raise money for museum operations. It is this operating support that keeps the museums doors open, their staff paid, promotes educational programming, and maintains and conserves the museum’s’ collections. Adequate support for operations is the foundation upon which the future of any museum is built.

5. What if I would like to donate to a museum, zoo, aquarium, science or nature centers that is not listed here?

Visit our “Can’t Find Your Museum?” section and register your favorite museum. All you need is the institution’s name, city and state – the rest is automatic.
We will contact that institution and invite them to join in our fundraising efforts.

6. If I recommend a museum, is there a cost to that institution?

There is absolutely no cost to museums. Although museum affiliates do take the time to promote ShopforMuseums to their members and visitors as it furthers the fundraising efforts on their behalf.

7. Can I place an order to be shipped to England?

Yes, with a few exceptions. Each one of the merchants featured on our site has their own international shipping guidelines. Please refer to those as you shop with us.

8. Can I go directly to the retailer’s site and still donate to my favorite museum?

Unfortunately not. Our system can only credit the museum designated when the order originates on ShopforMuseums.com.

9. How much would my museum of choice earn from my purchases through you?

That percentage varies depending upon the retailer. (Please note the percentage next to each retailer on our “Shopping Directory” page.) The average donation is generally 4% paid directly to the designated museums quarterly.

10. Can I designate more than one museum each time I shop?

No. We can only donate to one museum per purchase.

11. How are donations tracked? Who distributes them and how often?

We have enlisted a trusted third party to handle all of that for us. This company’s sole function is to track purchases, collect funds and make quarterly distributions to designated museums. ShopforMuseums.com receives detailed reports on all transactions.

12. What if I am unhappy with my purchase? May I return it? And, if so, will the donation be deducted from the museum I selected?

Please refer to the retailer’s return policy. All items purchased through ShopforMuseums carry the manufacturer’s warranty. If for any reason, you are unhappy with your purchase, please return it directly to the place of purchase for exchange or return. The donation will be debited accordingly from the next quarterly distribution. For additional information, please refer to our
Terms of Use”.

13. What about my privacy and credit card protection when I shop with you?

All of our information is kept under the strictest confidence and all of our retailers have agreed to do the same. For more information, please refer to our “Privacy Statement".

14. Are my purchases made through ShopforMuseums.com tax-deductible?

Unfortunately not. Purchases made through ShopforMuseums.com are not tax-deductible.

Hurricane Katrina

We are saddened that many U.S. Gulf Coast homes, businesses, as well as museums, parks and historic sites were severely damaged and/or destroyed during Hurricane Katrina and her aftermath.

As with all residents of the stricken region, many museum staff members have personally lost everything or don’t even know the status of their loved ones or homes.

Meanwhile, many staff members and their families rode out the storm, against FEMA orders, working around the clock at their facilities to secure priceless exhibits, protect animals and keep aquarium tanks running.

PLEASE HELP through the following organizations:

American Association of Museums: To learn more about the status of museums affected by Hurricane Katrina go to the American Association of Museums Hurricane webpage.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation has established the 2005 Hurricane Relief Fund to grant monies to affected communities and help re- establish their economies, much of which are based on historic tourism. Donate online and learn more at: National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The Southeastern Museum Conference is coordinating assistance from the AIC Emergency Preparedness, Response, & Recovery Committee and the Southeast Regional Conservation Association. SEMC is assessing needs; identifying available freezer space, storage facilities, and triage areas; and receiving donations of goods, services, and funds for distributions. Contact Richard Waterhouse, SEMC's executive director, at 404-378-3153 or

Checks can be made payable and sent to SEMC- The Southeastern Museums Conference, P.O. Box 9003, Atlanta, GA 31106. The SEMC is assessing damages, helping with exhibit salvage efforts and will donate finances, supplies and manpower where it is most needed.

The Southern Arts Federation has established the Southern Arts Federation Emergency Relief Fund to assist arts organizations and artists residing in Gulf Coast communities most devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
